The Opera Squirrel: What it is and what to expect

Hello and welcome to The Opera Squirrel!

The Opera Squirrel is my recent and youngest project. Why "squirrel"? Because I love squirrels, and I enjoy watching them jumping from branch to branch in my garden. They are incredibly lovely, elegant animals that are focused and persistent. Focus and persistence are the two top traits required for performance appreciation.

What you can expect to find on The Opera Squirrel

Despite the name, it will not all be about opera, but there will also be some theatre, as well as dramaturgical thoughts about a theme, a production, or some specific details in an opera or a theatre production.

Critics have to spare some personal thoughts to be at the same time instructive and straightforward in their reviews. This is good, and in fact, it guarantees good-quality articles, but at times, I personally wish to be able to expand the thoughts on some specifics and think of possible alternatives and/or solutions. This kind of indulgence, which has no place in the critic, finds its perfect place here. So, this website is my little refugium as well, where I can write in a relaxed manner that is most fitted to the meandering of my thoughts.

Think of this website as a cozy reading nook at home. My hope is that you would feel that way too during your visit.

Ground rule

I accept critics and discussions, but first of all, let us be respectful to one another when doing so. I can take harsh critics, but insults and ad hominem attacks will absolutely not be tolerated. Let us have an open, enriching, even confrontative discussion about the arts, but leave the negativity somewhere else.

In the future...

Like a cozy reading nook, the book collection may grow and one may speak more languages, but it should and will remain a refugium. That is my core vision for The Opera Squirrel in the future.

  • The website will keep its essence, and I will continue curating more and more contents with care; those that I find touching and interesting. Book reviews are not impossible in the future.
  • Language-wise, I plan to also write in French and German in the near future. Some articles will be translated, while some others will remain exclusively in the respective languages.
  • There will also be guest writers on The Opera Squirrel. They will be people in my profession, those who I know well and whose knowledge, observation, and judgment I trust, or readers who propose to write for the website, and whose thoughts I like.
